Bird Conservation in Northeast India: The what, the how and the why.

With stories about a 6th mass extinction in the headlines, ‘conservation’ is a word we all are becoming increasingly familiar with. But what exactly is conservation, how does science help contribute to conservation efforts, and why is conservation important?  Come out to Science Under the Stars this April to hear EEB PhD candidate Gautam Surya discuss these topics in the context of his own conservation work in Northeast India, a global biodiversity hotspot. Can’t make it to the talk or want an introduction to Gautam’s research and field experiences? You can read through a series of blog posts that he wrote for Global Wildlife Conservation in 2015 – they’re amazing!

Science Under the Stars is a free public outreach lecture series in Austin, Texas. The talk will be held outdoors at Brackenridge Field Laboratory, 2907 Lake Austin Blvd, Austin, Texas 78703. Here’s the schedule for this month’s event:

  • 7:00 pm: Snacks, kids activities, and displays of local animals and plants found at Brackenridge Field Laboratory will be available.
  • 7:15 pm-7:45 pm: Guided tour of the field lab (wear sturdy shoes and bring water)!
  • 8:00 pm: Settle in, because the talk begins now!
  • 8:45 pm: Q&A with the speaker.

Blending two species can create some really amazing animals and plants, but it also has consequences to their evolutionary fitness. Horns and Thorns: Nature’s Ammunition.

The natural world is filled with weapons. From horns to boiling acid, pincers to neurotoxins, animals (and plants!) have evolved a multitude of weapons with which to wage war. These weapons come in variety of shapes and sizes, and are used in a multitude of different ways and contexts. Yet, they have evolved for a common purpose: they’re useful for securing food, preventing yourself from being food, and, often, reliable with the ladies. At Science Under the Stars this March, come see some of nature’s most awe-inspiring weaponry and find out why they matter.

Many kinds of animal glow in the dark. Have you ever wondered why? How is it possible for some animals to glow while us humans cannot? In this talk we will explore stories of animals in the oceans that glow and the reasons why such a phenomenon exists.

Gotta Catch ‘Em All: Real Life Pokemon

Pokémon Go has encouraged everyone to go outside and catch Pokémon with their phones. Did you know that most Pokémon are based on real animals, many of which you can find right here in Texas? And you can use apps just like Pokémon Go to find them – while helping scientists with their research at the same time. Come out and learn the many ways in which citizen science has helped researchers around the world–and how you can get involved too!
