You don’t have to travel around the world to study them, but you could and I did. Come join us, and let yourself be convinced of the beauty, utility, diversity and mystery of diatoms by me, a slime hunter a.k.a. a diatomist.

We are not alone. We share our lives, our food, and our friends with trillions of bacterial beings. More bacterial cells live in the human body than there are stars in this galaxy. Yet we are now starting to explore this wild microworld and barely beginning to understand how it affects our health and well-being. Join us in a voyage through bacterial discovery. Who are they? How do we study them? Why should we be interested in learning more about them? Also, we will sing songs about them.

Coral reefs are important ecosystems that are currently experiencing massive global declines due to a variety of factors.  The Matz lab at UT Austin looks for certain corals that may be more resistant to harmful environmental changes in hopes of securing a better future for our reefs. Come and learn about these beautiful ocean creatures!
