Mark your calendars! We have four amazing speakers scheduled for this semester, on the second Thursday of every month:

- October 11: Emma Dietrich – social behavior of arachnids
- November 8: Colin Morrison – plant and animal chemical interactions
- December 13: Tracy Burkhard – As quiet as a mouse? (Not singing mice!)
Science Under the Stars is a free public outreach lecture series in Austin, Texas. Events are held outdoors at Brackenridge Field Laboratory, 2907 Lake Austin Blvd, Austin, Texas 78703. Arrive early for refreshments and fun activities for kids of all ages!

Fish are smarter than we think!
Have you ever heard that fish only have a three-second memory? Well that might not be giving fish enough credit. Fish are smarter than we think! They can learn from other fish, solve mazes, and even learn to hit a moving target despite never practicing! Join us for the first Science Under the Stars of the fall semester on September 13 with EEB candidate Kelly Wallace who will talk on some of the cool studies that scientists have conducted to show that fish have some pretty awesome cognitive abilities, as well as go over some of her own PhD work at UT looking at how fish solve problems.

- 7:00 pm: Snacks, kids activities, and displays of local animals and plants found at Brackenridge Field Laboratory will be available.
- 7:15 pm-7:45 pm: Guided tour of the field lab (wear sturdy shoes and bring water)!
- 8:00 pm: Settle in, because the talk begins now!
- 8:45 pm: Q&A with the speaker.

Scuba Diving Arthropods: How insects (and spiders) make their living underwater.
Modern insects and spiders both evolved from terrestrial ancestors, but some have evolved to live on or in the water. At Science Under the Stars this May, EEB PhD Candidate Robby Deans will discuss some of the challenges of this environment and how aquatic species overcome them. Additionally, he will talk about the diversity of aquatic arthropods and their interactions with humans. You can read more about Robby’s research interests on his lab’s website.

Bird Conservation in Northeast India: The what, the how and the why.
With stories about a 6th mass extinction in the headlines, ‘conservation’ is a word we all are becoming increasingly familiar with. But what exactly is conservation, how does science help contribute to conservation efforts, and why is conservation important? Come out to Science Under the Stars this April to hear EEB PhD candidate Gautam Surya discuss these topics in the context of his own conservation work in Northeast India, a global biodiversity hotspot. Can’t make it to the talk or want an introduction to Gautam’s research and field experiences? You can read through a series of blog posts that he wrote for Global Wildlife Conservation in 2015 – they’re amazing!

Symbiosis between trees and fungi: how mycorrhizae connect our forests
Mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiosis with the roots of most trees on Earth. These fungal networks enable entire forests to communicate and compete, and new research shows mycorrhizal fungi are central to understanding how forests will respond to global environmental change. Come on out to Science Under the Stars this March to learn about new research showing how these fungi connect forests, as well as new evidence that rapid global environmental change is altering our forests by manipulating the forest fungal microbiome.
